SHIRE’S OUTDOOR EATING OPTIONS GROW

By Bayley Cocking

ALFRESCO dining is the talk of the town in the Golden Plains Shire these school holidays.
Council recently received a $250,000 grant from the Victorian government to install COVID-safe outdoor eating locations across the municipality.
The state government’s Local Councils Outdoor Eating and Entertainment Package will see a variety of works completed in Bannockburn, Smythesdale, Inverleigh and Meredith.
Golden Plains Shire CEO Eric Braslis said the works should be completed by the end of April.
“The Bannockburn site is already open and ready for diners, with works to be completed before Easter at the Meredith and Inverleigh locations,” he said.
“The Smythesdale outdoor dining space is expected to be completed later in April.”
According to a council press release, a synthetic lawn, three shade sails, and five table settings have been constructed at Bannockburn Heart as part of the initiative.
Two shade sails and four dining settings will be put in at the Smythesdale town green, with a shade sail and two table settings coming to Inverleigh. Existing bench seats and furniture will be re-stained throughout Meredith.
Mr Braslis said the table settings would be made from recycled plastic and be accessible for all abilities.
“Installing table settings made of recycled plastic is a simple way Council can do its bit in diverting materials from landfill, all while creating more seating and dining options for our community,” he said.
“Golden Plains Shire is home to an estimated 3,380 residents who are over the age of 65, and more than 4,000 residents with a disability. When we’re creating public spaces, it’s vitally important we consider how all our residents can use and access these facilities.”
Council has confirmed that the dining expansions would be a permanent addition to the Shire.
Bannockburn resident Craig Grant said the new developments are “great” to see.
“The new shade sails are terrific,” he said. “The sails are right next to the water park, which is perfect as there’s no other shaded area to sit under.”
“Bannockburn’s Farmers Market is also held nearby the new dining area, so it’ll give people a spot to sit down with a take-away meal or coffee on those weekends.”
